Backyard Space Station

ready
With the world going to hell
in a jet-fueled baby carriage,
Jimmy and I looked at each other
and said simultaneously,
“It’s time to leave the planet.”
While Jimmy worked secretly
in his backyard at night
(his dad had all the parts for the rocket
stowed in the garage)
I worked on our space suits
and communication devises
(thank goodness for mom’s cooking utensils!)
Within a week, we were ready.
On a warm summer night,
we climbed aboard our starship,
closed the hatch,
and started that fateful countdown
We were going to the stars.
